Preparations for the Global Issues Service Summit are under way. I am extremely excited and nervous for the summit which I think is going to come by extremely quickly. I am a co-leader of the design committee, which consists of 3 other people. The first term has been spent designing the different materials that are required for the summit, and contacting the companies that could make the different items. The different tasks were divvied up between the four committee members, each responsible for a different aspect of the process. I think successfully delegating tasks is the key to an effective group, and I think this is apparent our committee because we trust that each of us will get our set of tasks done.
One of the problems I have encountered through the course of the last two months has been communication. Communication is one of the components which is required in any group activity, and it is a problem in our committee and the entire GISS team. The entire GISS team is huge, because we need power houses of people to run and arrange the summit, but this can prove to be problematic when it come to communication between committees. While the fortnightly leadership meeting help us catch-up with each other and the progress, these meeting are too short because we tend to run out of time. In addition, communication hadn't been too strong in my committee, because the GISS logo was made over induction and half of the design committee had no input whatsoever. This problem was solved later on during a meeting with the rest of the team, as well as other leaders. The JUMP! program helped with this immensely because I was able to get to know the rest of the leadership team, and it somehow helped us come up with a common vision for the summit. In addition JUMP! provided me with an arsenal of leadership techniques I can use, which make will make my leadership a lot more effective. In my opinion, after the leadership weekend, I have a more focused vision for the summit and have learned ways in which I can better communicate with the rest of the team.
